Ayolas and Ituzaingó face each other across the Upper Paraná, with the Yacyretá dam in between. One is Paraguayan and the other Argentine, they fish the same river, and since November 2024 you can drive from one to the other.
The Paraguayan side
Ayolas and the Paraná Corridor is the area with the most places listed in the whole guide: 24. Species: golden dorado, surubí catfish, pacú, boga and pirá pytá.
The golden dorado season: year round outside the closed season; best from March to May and from August to October. The surubí season: year round (outside the closed season); from June to September it holds in the deep pools.
The Argentine side
Ituzaingó, in the province of Corrientes, is the other base on the same stretch of river. We do not cover it in this guide, because this is a guide to fishing in Paraguay, but it has its own guides and excursions, surveyed and verified on Iberá Experience, the guide to the Corrientes side.
The licence does not cross the border. The Paraguayan MADES licence is valid in Paraguayan waters and nowhere else. To fish on the Argentine side you need the Corrientes licence, and the provincial rules (bag limits, sizes and temporary closures) are set by the Dirección de Recursos Naturales, which updates them several times a year: check recnaturalesctes.gob.ar. We do not reproduce them here, because an outdated figure on that can cost you a fine.
How to cross
The Ayolas and Ituzaingó border crossing runs along the crest of the Yacyretá dam. According to the Entidad Binacional Yacyretá, it is open to light vehicles, seven days a week, from 9:00 to 19:00.
- It is for vehicles only. When it opened, it was reported that motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians cannot cross, and that you cannot stop or get out of the car on top of the dam.
- There is no commercial ferry making that crossing: it is either over the dam during those hours or around through another crossing.
- Outside those hours you cannot cross, so a fishing trip that ends late on the other side leaves you on the other side.
Opening hours and conditions at a border crossing change without notice. Before you set off, confirm them on the EBY page, in Spanish. We checked it there on 6 October 2026.
Which side suits you
There is no better side: it is the same river and the same fish. What changes is where you are coming from, what papers you have and where it is more comfortable to sleep. If you enter through Paraguay, Ayolas and the Paraná Corridor covers the whole trip with no border in between. If you are already in Corrientes, crossing to fish on the Paraguayan side adds paperwork and a time window to the equation.
Before booking, check the MADES licence, which for foreign anglers is a special licence for visitors (the licence step by step), the minimum sizes (surubí 85 cm; golden dorado, 70 cm in the rest of the country, needs 75 cm on this stretch shared with Argentina under the binational regulation) and the amounts of the fines, all on the licence, closed season and sizes page. And the month-by-month calendar, to choose when.
